Heart And Soul

Shema Israel

Heart and Soul is a common phrase in English. It means without reservations, completely, or wholly - Merriam-Webster [1] or the utmost of one's energy, enthusiasm, and determination - Freedict [2]. We might say “to do something with all your might”. Heart and Soul is a Bible phrase as well. The most familiar example is Dt 6:4-5, known by the Jews as the shema, which means hear.

Dt 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Jesus quotes this verse in the gospels, recorded in Matthew, Mark and Luke, what are called the synoptic gospels. Each version is slightly different.

Mt 22:36 ESV “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Several other verses use the phrase Heart and Soul, almost always talking about how we are to love God. For example(s).

1 Chronicles 22:19 Now set your heart and soul to seek the LORD your God.
1 Kings 8:48
Dt 26:16
Josh 23:14
2 Chr 34:31
2K 23:3
2K 23:25
Dt 10:12
2 Chr 15:12

Would you be surprised to learn that one verse in all the Bible says that God is going to do something with His whole Heart and Soul? Only one, Jer 32:41. Let's start reading in verse 36 to get some context, then discuss some of the meaning implied here.

Jer 32:36 Now therefore thus says the Lord(1), the God of Israel, concerning this city(2) of which you say, ‘It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword, by famine, and by pestilence’: 37 Behold, I will gather them from all the countries to which I drove them in my anger and my wrath and in great indignation. I will bring them back to this place, and I will make them dwell in safety. 38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God. 39 I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear(3) me forever, for their own good and the good of their children after them. 40 I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear3 of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me. 41 I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness(4), with all my heart and all my soul.

(1) YHVH
(2) Jer 32:1 gives the name of this city as Jerusalem
(3) awe, reverence
(4) assuredly, truly, in truth

What is He is going to do with His whole Heart and His whole Soul? He is going to “plant His people in this land”. Jeremiah wrote this passage while imprisoned in King Zedekiah's palace when Jerusalem was under siege by the Babylonians. He foretold that Jerusalem would fall to Nebuchadnezzar, and they would be driven out, BUT they would be gathered back to THIS land. Before Jerusalem even fell, God prophesied that they would be brought back.

Jer 32:1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 At that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem

Nebuchadnezzar Siege Of Jerusalem

Let's ask “Who are His people”? “What land”?

Jeremiah was writing in Jerusalem to the Jewish people right before being taken captive. The northern kingdom often called Israel went into captivity about a 100 years earlier - Assyrian [3], Babylonian [4], and they became known as the Ten Lost Tribes. Jer chapters 31 and 32 speak repeatedly of Israel and Judah returning to their land, where verses 32:36-41 are directed to the tribe of Judah.

Other verses about return.

Jer 31:10 Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock.’
Isaiah 11:11-12
Isaiah 61:4
Isaiah 65:21-22
Jeremiah 30:3
Jeremiah 30:18
Jeremiah 31:5
Jeremiah 32:41-42
Ezekiel 36:33-36
Ezekiel 37:12-14
Hosea 14:5-7
Amos 9:14-15
Zephaniah 3:20
Zechariah 8:12

Back to Jer 32:41. With all His heart and all His soul, God is going to “plant His people in this land”. He specifies what land in vs 44.

Jer 32:44 Fields shall be bought for money, and deeds shall be signed and sealed and witnessed, in the land of Benjamin, in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities of the Negeb; for I will restore their fortunes, declares the Lord.”

I looked all these places up.

Jerusalem – west of the Dead Sea, capital of Judah
Benjamin – region just north of Jerusalem - visualunit [5]
Cities of Judah – Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron, Lachish, Beersheva - bible_topical [6]
Hill country – surrounding Jerusalem from Hebron to Mt Gilboa - bible-history [7]
Shephelah – Lowlands, Judean foothills, west of Jerusalem - shephelah [8]
Cities of Negev – desert, south of the Hill country, includes Beersheba - holyland [9]

Hill Country

It is really six ways of describing the region of Judea.

Tel Aviv Residents Celebrate

Jer 32 describes Judah (Jews) returning to the land of Judah (Judea). Some Jews returned after 70 years of captivity in Babylon, then the Jewish people had a level of sovereignty over the land for about 500 years, till Rome destroyed the Temple in 70AD and dispersed them again. There has always been a remnant of Jews in that land, but they began returning in large numbers in the late 19th century. Since Israel's Independence in 1948, Jews are back in their land. 46% of all Jews in the world live in Israel today - jpr [10]. Over 70% of Israel's population is Jewish - wiki(demographics)[11]. It is somewhat confusing that the modern nation of Judah is called Israel. But neither the return from Babylon nor the 20th century return fully satisfy the promises made in Jer 32:37-40.

Jer 32:37 ...I will make them dwell in safety(1). 38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God(2). 39 I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their own good and the good of their children after them. 40 I will make with them an everlasting covenant …

(1)
Clearly, modern Israel does not live in safety now.
(2) Almost half the Jews in Israel are not religious.

So there is another return coming. Prophecies can have multiple fulfillments and/or partial fulfillments. Many scholars believe Judah will have two international returns.

In short there will be two end-time regatherings: One before the tribulation and one after the tribulation - Fruchtenbaum [12], Thomas D. Ice [13]

The idea of Jews returning to the land of Israel was something so improbable before the 20th century that scholars taught that the promises to Judah and Israel were transferred to the church. This is called Replacement Theology, or Supercessionism, as in the church supersedes Israel. The idea still exists.

So unlikely did a realistic restoration of the Jews to their Land seem that throughout church history, Christians, for the most part, could not conceive of a literal fulfillment of this promise. Therefore, many believers in Jesus interpreted these prophecies figuratively or historically - chosen_people [14]

Proponents of Replacement Theology misquote the Bible to justify their theology, saying things like this.

God’s covenant was transferred to Christians who became “spiritual Israel” and heirs of God’s promises.

The “kingdom of God” was taken from the Jews and was “given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof” - bible_ask [15], hermeneutics [16]

But the Bible actually says.

Mt 21:43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. 45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them (not the Jews in general).

Some go so far as to say

There is a restored nation of Israel in God’s plan for the future, but there is no reason to think that the current nation of Israel is necessarily prophetically significant.

One big problem with Replacement Theology is that it makes God into a promise breaker. God clearly made covenants in the Bible. Can He then say “I gave your blessings to someone else”?

Replacement Theology undermines God’s faithfulness by suggesting He would abandon His covenant people, raising questions about His reliability in fulfilling promises - defendtheword [17]

Consider the history of modern Israel in terms of this verse.

Gen 12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.

I think there are plenty of reasons to think God is planting His people, the Jews, in their land, modern Israel, with His whole heart and His whole soul. Consider the remarkable history of the Jewish people - conquered and dispersed twice in ancient times, and yet is born again as a nation in a day, May 15, 1948, still speaking Hebrew. Consider all the miracles the nation of Israel experienced in repeated wars with her neighbors, beginning the day after Israel became a nation - wiki(Israel_wars) [18].

Independence May 15, 1948, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon attack the day after Israel's Independence. Israel was incredibly outgunned, and losing the war when the Arab countries agreed to inexplicable cease fire - haatzmaut [19]. When fighting resumed, Israel won the war. In one battle the Jordanian army all witnessed a vision of Abraham in the sky defending an Israeli platoon – the Jordanians dropped their weapons and fled - 17-miraculous-israeli [20].

Six Day War June 5-10, 1967 Israel took down half the Egyptian air force: 204 Egyptian planes, partly because a warning message from Jordan wasn't received because Egypt changed the coding frequencies the day before.

Israel captured Jerusalem without firing a shot on June 8 [20].

Golda Meir
Yom Kippur Oct 6,1973, Arab armies attack on Yom Kippur, Israel incredibly outgunned again. PM Golda Meir called President Nixon in the middle of the night. He orders a massive airlift of munitions and materiel. Why? Because his mother taught him as a child to stand with Israel. "Richard, someday you’re going to be in a position where you can help save the Jewish people. And when that day comes, you must do everything in your power."  - Golda Meir[21]

Entebbe 27 June 1976 Terrorists hijacked an Air France Flight, taking 105 Israeli hostages to Entebbe, Uganda. Israeli forces killed all the terrorists, rescued 102 hostages - three were lost. One Israeli soldier died, Yonatan Netanyahu, brother of current PM Benjamin Netanyahu -

God fights using weapons like weather, visions like Abraham in the sky, rewarding Israeli boldness like the pagers, but also fear and confusion of the enemies, and even the teaching of moms. Check out some of the links cited above for many more examples of miracles.

Dt 20:4 for the LORD your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.

Eye To Eye

Would it surprise you to know that almost every time the United States has pressured Israel to trade land for peace, also called the two state solution, and sometimes the partition plan, the United States has had some kind of catastrophic event? Events like hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires, floods, droughts, snowstorms, even economic crises. Yes, most of these are phenomena that occur naturally, but the intensity and frequency of extraordinary weather events seems higher in the last 30 years. And the timing of these catastrophes reveals a pattern.

Why? Because the Bible says not to divide the land. Remember, this is the land He promised to plant His people in WITH HIS WHOLE HEART AND SOUL. God is protective of that land Judea and that people the Jews. We've already seen that God fights on their behalf – He also fights against nations (even America) that try to force Israel to violate what the Bible tells them.

Eze 48:14 They shall not sell any of it and they shall not exchange it, and they shall not do away with the first fruit of the land, because its holiness is of LORD JEHOVAH.

Joel 3:2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. And I will enter into judgment with them there, on behalf of my people and my heritage Israel, because they have scattered them among the nations and have divided up my land,

Author William Koenig wrote a book called “Eye To Eye: Facing the Consequences of Dividing Israel”, 576 pages. It contains details of 127 Catastrophes mostly in the US, beginning 1991 the time of the Madrid Peace Conference -
wiki(madrid) [24], up to publication in 2017 - Amazon(EyeToEye) [25]. Catastrophes linked to pressuring Israel to give up land. So it doesn't cover the last eight years. For that I had to find sources on the Internet.

Why the US? Aren't we part of Israel too? The US has mostly had a very good relationship with Israel, but the US took the lead in trying to resolve the Israeli–Palestinian conflict with the Madrid Conference. And every US President since George HW Bush, aka Bush1, has pressured Israel to give up land for peace. Let's look at some of the consequences. Keep in mind that this represents one tenth of the catastrophes documented by Koenig and others.

Any plan that compromises Israel's God-given land, no matter how well-intentioned or financially attractive, carries profound spiritual consequences. Not only for Israel’s neighbors — but for America itself - watch.org(warning) [26]

Barack Obama

When Obama became President, he appeared to be more interested in building Arab relations than supporting Israel. And he did little to advance peace in Israel. Obama’s lack of pressure on Israel allowed them to expand on the covenant land. Lack of pressure on Israel led to fewer judgment events. BUT

April 5 2011, President Obama met with Israeli President Shimon Peres at the White House. Obama stated that the need to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was urgent. 751 tornadoes hit in April smashing the prior record of 267.

May 22, 2011, Obama states his Policy – Israel’s Land in Exchange for Peace. Like Bush, President Obama wanted Israel to cease building in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. That same day (within hours) a massive F5 tornado hit Joplin Missouri. This was the deadliest and costliest single tornado on record in the U.S.

Donald Trump first term

Despite his support for Israel, President Trump made the same mistake as his predecessors. That being, in his “Deal of the Century” he included Israel’s relinquishment of land to the Palestinians.

August 24 2017 Jared Kushner attended a meeting with the leader of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas to restart the peace process. On this very day, Tropical Storm Harvey became Hurricane Harvey which rapidly intensified to a category 4 hurricane and made landfall on the Texas coast on the 25th. [30]

Impact of Winter Storm Fern

It could just be coincidences, 150 coincidences.

Not Jews?

Some people claim that modern Jews are not really descendants of the ancient Jews of the Bible, and therefore have no right to the land known as Israel today. Mahmoud Abbas, leader of the Palestinian Authority, has made that claim -
Abbas [37]. Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens have made the claim also - jweekly [38]. Genetics has actually shown that the world's Jewish populations share an Ancient Middle Eastern root - Khazar [39]

What other nation and what other people has God protected by countless miracles? What other people is God planting in His land with His whole heart and soul?

The Khazar hypothesis is also sometimes cited in antisemitic arguments promoted by adherents of various movements and ideologies to express the belief that modern Jews are not true descendants of the Israelites.

The theory has been used to counter the concept of Jewish nationhood.[Khazar]

The consensus in genetic research is that the world's Jewish populations (including the Ashkenazim) share substantial genetic ancestry derived from a common Ancient Middle Eastern founder population, and that Ashkenazi Jews have no genetic ancestry attributable to Khazars.

Abbas repeated the false claim that Ashkenazi Jews descend from the Khazars, a long-standing antisemitic trope used to deny Jewish historical connection to the Land of Israel. [Abbas]

Recap

Jer 32:41 I will rejoice in doing them good, and assuredly I will plant them in this land, with all my heart and all my soul.

This is the only time in the Bible where God promises to do something “with all His heart and all His soul”. We have seen that the land is the land of Judah, Judea in modern language. We have seen that the descendants of Judah (the Jews) are the people to be planted. We have reviewed a very small sampling of the miracles God has done for His people, miracles that show God is with them. We have also seen some of the consequences to those who would try to persuade Israel to give up land for peace.

So what should our response be? If He is bringing His people back to their land with His whole heart and soul, we need to be on His side with our whole hearts and our whole souls.

It's All About The Benjamins

A Short History of Israel's Smallest Tribe

As Rachel was dying after the birth of her second son (Jacob's twelfth son), she named him Benoni, "son of my sorrow", but his father Jacob named him Benjamin, "son of my right (hand)". Benjamin is the name he is known by in the Bible. Because Joseph and Benjamin were born to Rachel, they were Jacob's favorite sons, which caused some serious sibling rivalry, at least towards Joseph. Jacob was clearly protective of Benjamin after he thought he had lost Joseph, and the other ten sons of Jacob apparently felt bad about the way they treated Joseph, selling him into slavery, so they became protective of Benjamin as well.

If you like this (or not), check out my other articles at the
Between The Ears BLOG INDEX, with titles and summaries.

Judah Saves Benjamin

Benjamin and the Goblet
Joseph became powerful in Egypt, and his brothers came to him to buy food, but didn't recognize him. Joseph planted his goblet in Benjamin's pack so Benjamin would look guilty of theft. Judah steps up and offers to trade himself as a slave in Benjamin's place. In spite of Leah and her children (including Judah) being second class citizens in Jacob's eyes, Judah's plea was based on how much sorrow it would cause his father to lose Benjamin. Note in Genesis 44:27 that Judah quotes Jacob who only refers to the two sons of Rachel. The phrase "your servant my father" refers to Jacob. History turned on this speech by Judah, not because he changed Joseph's mind, but because he showed God his own character, willing to sacrifice for Benjamin.

Genesis 44:27 “Your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons; 28 and the one went out from me, and I said, “Surely he is torn in pieces,” and I have not seen him since. 29 ‘If you take this one also from me, and harm befalls him, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.’ 30 “Now, therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the lad’s life, 31 when he sees that the lad is not with us, he will die.

The next thing we read about Benjamin is that he had sons while in Egypt - Gen 46:21.

"Blessings" Of the Twelve Tribes

The next thing we read about Benjamin is in a prophecy about the twelve sons of Jacob. Jacob introduces the prophecy by saying it is for the last days - "And Jacob called his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, and I will tell you what will befall you at the end of days." Gen 49:1, Darby Bible Translation. "End of days" is also translated as latter days, last days, days to come, in the future, etc. Historians use these prophecies to locate Israel's tribes throughout history and at the end time. Here is what Jacob said about Benjamin.

Gen 49:27 Benjamin is a ravenous wolf;
In the morning he devours the prey,
And in the evening he divides the spoil.

I find that cryptic. In fact, most of the sons receive a cryptic saying. Some refer to this chapter as the "blessing of the twelve tribes" - Ellicott's Commentary [1], but most of them don't read like blessings to me. Commentaries agree that Benjamin's "blessing" means he would have a warlike character at some point in the future.

Land

Benjamin is between
Ephraim and Judah
Time passes, Israel leaves Egypt, and a census is taken by Moses. The tribe of Benjamin is neither the largest nor the smallest tribe, for examples, Simeon 22,200, Benjamin 45,600, Judah 76,500 - Num 26. More time passes, and the Promised Land is divided among the tribes (except Levi the priestly tribe). Benjamin's territory is just north of Judah, and contains the city of Jerusalem - Josh 18:11-27.

After the land is divided, many of the tribes of Israel (Zebulun, Issachar, Napthali, Gad, Asher, Dan, Rueben, Simeon) fade from the pages of the Bible. Israel's history is mostly told through Ephraim, Manasseh, Judah, Levi, and Benjamin.

Benjamin Becomes the Smallest Tribe

Judges 19-21 tells a very dark story in Benjamin's history. The men of Gibeah, a Benjamite town, acted like the men of Sodom, wanting to have sex with a man who was spending the night in Gibeah. The man, a Levite, gave them his concubine instead, and they raped her to death. The Levite cut her body in twelve pieces and sent the pieces to each tribe. All Israel banded together for justice against the rapists, but Benjamin wouldn't give them up. Civil war ensued, and Benjamin was reduced to 600 men. Since then, Benjamin has been the smallest tribe. The Bible is silent about whether the rapists lived or died in the civil war. Twice the Bible records incidents of men demanding sex with strangers. Each ended in death and destruction. It may have been God's way or purging that evil from Israel.

Despite their few numbers, surprisingly a Benjamite, Saul, is chosen as king over all Israel. Unfortunately, Saul wasn't a righteous king, and the kingdom was taken from him and given to David, a Jew. While David too had his problems, his dynasty was established forever. But alas, the kingdom of Israel was split in two in the days of David's grandson Rehoboam, the northern ten tribes known as the kingdom of Israel ruled by Jeroboam, the southern three tribes known as the kingdom of Judah ruled by Rehoboam. Consider this verse suggesting that Benjamin would side with Rehoboam and the Jews.
(The prophet Ahijah is talking to Jeroboam about Solomon's son Rehoboam)
1 K 11:35 but I will take the kingdom from his son’s (Rehoboam's) hand and give it to you (Jeroboam), even ten tribes. 36 But to his son (Rehoboam) I will give one tribe, that My servant David may have a lamp always before Me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen for Myself to put My name.
Since Benjamin was so small, and already considered part of Judah, the "one tribe" could be talking about the tribe of Judah; OR Benjamin could be the "one tribe" added to Judah - Gill's Exposition [2].

However, this obscure prophecy in Jeremiah could mean that Benjamin is to split off from Judah at some point. Some teach that Benjamin did just that after the destruction of the second Temple - The Tribe of Benjamin are the Normans [3].
Jer 6:1 Flee for safety, O sons of Benjamin,
From the midst of Jerusalem!
...
For evil looks down from the north,
And a great destruction.
But that's getting ahead of the story.

Benjamin Saves Judah

Esther appears before the king
The northern ten tribes (known as Israel or Ephraim) are taken captive, and eventually the southern tribes (known as Judah, but includes Benjamin) are also taken captive. During this captivity (478BC) - Introduction to Esther [4], the book of Esther takes place, where Esther, a Benjamite, offers herself to save Judah, that is the ethnic Jews in Persia, repaying what Judah did for Benjamin back in Egypt - Esther Pays An Old Debt [5]. Note that Mordecai and Esther are identified as Jews AND Benjamites - Esther 2:5.

Return To the Land

Meanwhile, King Cyrus agreed to let the Jews rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. Notice who responded to the call. One might say that Judah saved Benjamin again.
Ezra 1:2 Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, 'The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and He has appointed me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah'.
5 Then the heads of fathers’ households of Judah and Benjamin and the priests and the Levites arose, even everyone whose spirit God had stirred to go up and rebuild the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem.
Josephus confirms that only Judah and Benjamin came back, but he also refers to the "immense multitude" of the ten tribes that stayed beyond the Euphrates - Antiquities of the Jews  [6].

Benjamin IS Galilee

Judah and Galilee
in Jesus's day

Centuries pass, Judah has taken over Jerusalem, and Benjamin lives north of Judah, in a region called Galilee. This is where Jesus grew up, and where the disciples came from, some teach that 11 of the 12 original disciples were Benjamites, the exception was Judas Iscariot, a Jew, who was replaced by a Benjamite.
"In this land nearly the whole life of Jesus was spent; and it is worthy of note that 11 of His 12 chosen were Galileans" - The Temple Dictionary of the Bible(Galilee) [7].

And the Apostle Paul self identified as both a Jew AND a Benjamite.
Acts 21:39 But Paul said, “I am a Jew of Tarsus
Romans 11:1 For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of  Benjamin.
If the Apostles were indeed Benjamites, then nearly all the books in the New Testament were written by Benjamites, the exceptions being Jude (Jesus's brother), Luke and Acts written by Luke (a Gentile companion of Paul), and maybe Hebrews (people argue about the authorship of Hebrews). According to some, Benjamin is fulfilling the prophecy of being a "lamp always before Me in Jerusalem" - 1 K 11:35. Through the Apostolic writings (the lamp), Benjamin will again save Judah, save them from the partial blindness that happened to Israel, including Judah - Rom 11:25.

Benjamin Separates From Judah

After the New Testament era, we follow the story of Benjamin through historical sources. Adam Rutherford [11] wrote that Benjamin did indeed split from Judah at the time of the destruction of the Temple 70AD. Eusebius, an early church historian claims that Christians in Jerusalem were supernaturally warned before the siege to flee - Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History , book 3:5:2 , written in 264 A.D [8]. They fled to Pella, a city in northwest Jordan - Did All the Christians Flee to Pella? [9]. From there, they spread into Asia Minor, modern day Turkey. And these early Christians in Pella and Asia Minor were primarily Benjamites - Israel’s Wanderings [10], and many remained there for two centuries - Iceland's Great Inheritance [11].

The Bible can be confusing in its use of the word Jew, as in the case of Esther and Paul, and the rest of the tribe of Benjamin. Since Benjamin was part of Judah, they were also called Jews, but they were aware of their ancestry. Some even refer to Abraham as a Jew, but that is impossible since Judah was Abraham's great-grandson.
During the time that the people of Benjamin were attached to Judah they were often classified as Jews too, but they were not really Jews, because the term "Jews" is simply a contraction of "Judahites", i.e., descendants of Judah, whereas the Benjamites were not descended from Judah at all, but from Benjamin. The Tribe of Benjamin were never called Jews before they were joined to the Tribe of Judah, and they were never so called again after their separation from Judah. And the other ten tribes of Israel were never called Jews at any period of their history, but they were often called Israelites. So, although every Jew was also an Israelite, every Israelite was not a Jew, just as every Scotsman is a Briton, but every Briton is not a Scotsman - Iceland's Great Inheritance [11].

Go West (And North) Young Man

Dacia is Romain, Bulgaria
From Asia Minor, Benjamin traveled north and west to an area called Dacia, Romania and Bulgaria today - British Israel(Benjamin) [3]. Benjamin kept migrating north and west, and today can be found in Norway (Vikings), Normandy, Britain via the Norman Conquest, Iceland, and Quebec. Different authors have different opinions about the whereabouts of modern day Benjamin.  Steve Collins, author of Lost Ten Tribes Found [12] favors Norway - Benjamin: A Wolfpack From the North [13],  Adam Rutherford argues for Iceland - Iceland's Great Inheritance [11], and Peter Salemi includes all the places listed above - British Israel(Benjamin) [3]. All of these authors agree on the Asia Minor, Dacia, and Viking connections. Tracing Benjamin through history is done by looking for Benjamin's identifying characteristics. The historical details can be found in the links above.
  • A small tribe
  • A protected tribe
  • Associated with a wolf
  • Left handed warriors (ironically Benjamin means "Son of my Right Hand")
  • Associated with Judah

I know that some do not believe that the ten tribes of Israel survived to this day. But consider the "blessings" Jacob spoke over his sons in Gen 49. They can't all refer to the Jews in the modern nation of Israel. They refer to nations in the world at the time of the end.

Some say that the lives of the Patriarchs foreshadow events to happen at the end time. So there may be future fulfillments of Judah saving Benjamin, and Benjamin saving Judah. I don’t have any insights into what they may be, but I look forward to watching the future of Benjamin and Judah unfold.

Truth Changes Everything

A friend and I were talking about how difficult it can be to persuade someone of something, even when we are armed with facts, and yes - the truth. Often it is very difficult to convince someone of the simple truth. But in religious discussions, it seems almost impossible to change someone's mind.

Doctrinal Confusion

In the collective Churches of God, I have seen three major doctrinal controversies keep coming up that never seem to go away - Sacred Names, Calendar, and Nature of God. I bring these up as concrete examples of doctrines that cause controversy, but not change. This may be more of a personal rant, so if this doesn't apply to you, skip to #Christmas.

If you like this (or not), check out my other articles at the
Between The Ears BLOG INDEX, with titles and summaries.

Sacred Names - This is the idea that we must use the correct name for God, and also Jesus Christ. In the Bible, God's name is written YHVH, with vowel markings (not inspired) that make it read as either Yahweh, even though there is no "W" sound in Hebrew; or Jehovah, even though there is no "J" sound in Hebrew, or Yehovah; or Yahava, or possibly some other variants. Actual Hebrew scholars don't agree on the pronunciation, but many people are certain they know how, that they have truth on their side. How does a small town boy like me tell who is right when the scholars don't agree? Further it's not clear to me why we need to use the Hebrew pronunciation for these two names. Most names are changed as they pass from language to language (Johann, Juan, John, Yochanan). At the other end of the spectrum are the those who won't speak His name even if they did know it.

Nature of God - Most Churches teach that God is a Trinity, Most Churches of God teach that God is a Binity (yes that's a word), but some teach that God is a Unity, meaning God the Father is the only God, not Jesus in case that wasn't clear. Each camp has its Bible verses as proof, but ignore the other camps' proof texts. I have an opinion formed by reading the Bible and the arguments from all camps, but the truth is the actual nature of God is not up to debate, He is what He is regardless of our arguments. Who am I to resolve the debate?

Calendar - Besides the well known Hebrew calendar, published and freely available, there are at least four competing camps that claim the Hebrew calendar is wrong, but theirs is right, and their calendar is based on nothing but the Bible. The problem I have is that if they all based their calendars on the Bible, shouldn't they all come to the same conclusion? They don't. I've read more than I care to about calendars, and I am not expert enough to tell if one of these represents truth.

All of the people who argue such things are very sure of themselves, or as I like to say "often wrong, but never in doubt". Sometimes I think that love thy neighbor has been replaced with love thy calendar.

It occurs to me that the demons know the truth of each of these controversial doctrines. It appears they were created before the earth (the angels shouted for joy when earth was created - Job 38:7), so they saw  their Creator face to face at least once. As far as we know, no new angels are being created. And we understand demons to be fallen angels. The point is that they know God's nature from experience; they know perfectly well His name; and they know how the calendar is counted. But the truth doesn't do them any good. As the Bible says, the demons believe and tremble (James 2:19) - they are not atheists.

Now let me introduce two other teachings - Christmas and the identity of Israel.

#Christmas - It seems every year, someone publishes articles showing that "Christmas" was being kept long before Jesus' birth. They show that He couldn't have been born in December. My intent is not to prove it all over again, but to point out that these articles don't change anyone's behavior. The truth about Christmas is out there. People don't deny it, but they keep on celebrating Christmas.

Israel - As far as I know, all the churches of God teach that Israel and Jews are different. The word "Jew" is derived from the Hebrew name Judah, who was the fourth son of Jacob. Jacob's other name was ISRAEL. So all Jews are Israelites, but not all Israelites are Jews. A person could descend from one of the other eleven sons, and still be an Israelite, but not a Jew. I have read articles that say Abraham was the first Jew. Abraham was the great grandfather of Judah. If Abraham were a Jew, then descendants of Abraham's son Ishmael would be Jews, as well as the sons of Abraham's second wife Keturah (all twelve of them). I have read that Moses (who was a Levite not a Jew) led the Jews out of Egypt - yes, and eleven other tribes as well. The point is not to prove this exhaustively from Biblical sources, but to assert that it is simple enough to understand.

The identity of Israel is the key to understanding lots of prophecy. Prophecies like "possessing the gates of your enemies" can't be applied to Judah (the modern nation of Israel), but certainly can apply to the USA and British Commonwealth aka BC (Panama Canal, Suez Canal, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Falklands). Prophecies like Israel was promised to become "a nation and a multitude of nations". Again, this doesn't fit Judah the nation of Israel, but does fit the US and BC. Prophecies like "I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah" show they are different peoples. My point is that it is simple, but also important to understand.

You Would Have To Change

So why do people not heed the truth? What happened to being a lover of the truth? Because people would have to change. Consider the average Christmas keeper. If he believed it was wrong, what could he do? Search out the real holy days from the Bible, find a church that kept them, and join them? That is disruptive to a family. Accepting and acting on the truth about Christmas will change relationships with family and friends. I speak from experience, though I never anticipated the changes at the time. I embraced the truth about Christmas and God's actual holy days (see Leviticus 23), not realizing the changes that would happen to nearly all my relationships.

Consider a Jew who believes that Israel means Jew. Accepting that one belief that Israel does not equal Jew will put him at odds with his fellow Jews. Where would he go?

Credibility And Authority

Authority figures have better success at persuading people, assuming you like your authority figure that is. The words of an unknown carry little weight, even if speaking truth. In time, the unknown may establish credibility, but until then will have little impact. In other words, why would you believe me in any of these teachings? How does anyone gain authority/credibility? In corporations, through promotions.  In science or academia, by publishing.  In sports, by scoring lots of points.  In business, by making lots of money.  In government, by getting elected.  In preaching, by speaking the truth. (Miracles would help establish credibility.)  How does one know when they are hearing the truth? I've pointed out three examples where I can't tell.  At some level, we evaluate everyone, authority or not, we all choose to believe certain sources over others. I choose to trust Hebrew scholars over self appointed scholars.  I choose to trust authors/teachers/preachers whose work I've evaluated before, that is they made sense to me before.  You evaluate me based on what I've written before, and what you're reading now.  I evaluate teaching according to the Bible, to logic, and to experience.  The Bereans "searched the scriptures daily to see if these things were so" Acts 17:11, that's a good place to start. Another scripture to help evaluate people is this, "By their fruits shall you know them" - Matt 7:16, that is to say their life should match their words.

People pay attention to every word from the President, Prime Minister, or Pope, but does that guarantee they speak truth? Famous people use their fame as an ersatz authority - think of sports figures or actors, why would you expect wisdom from their lips? They simply have access to a microphone. Think about how powerful it is when an authority figure speaks the truth. And sadly, how destructive it is when an authority figure speaks falsely, knowingly or not.

The people who hold doctrines concerning the nature of God, or calendars may be speaking the truth, but they have no authority or credibility in my life. But if I believed one of them, it would disrupt my life. I would have to leave my current church of 40 years, and go somewhere else. Some friendships would survive, most wouldn't. I have a vested interest in NOT believing them. And it is the same for the Christmas keeper, and the Jew=Israel crowd. Accepting those truths would change everything for them. That's why it's so hard to persuade people.

So should we not try at all? We absolutely should try, the Church was instructed to "preach the gospel, feed the flock". It is one of the big reasons we are here, we are supposed to share the truth we have received. I just never recognized how hard it is to accept some truths until I looked at possibly changing my own long standing beliefs. If I were to act on a new teaching, it would change everything. And I haven't been so persuaded.
